font-size: 12px; line-height: normal; font-family: Helvetica; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">One hundred percent of the 6th through 12th grade students who participate in the USC Leslie and William McMorrow Neighborhood Academic Initiative (<span class=\"s2\">USC McMorrow NAI)<\/span> go on to college after they graduate from high school, with most of them attending USC.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>USC McMorrow NAI <span class=\"s3\">scholars have also gone on to attend UCLA, UC Berkeley, Stanford, Harvard, and many more prestigious universities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><\/span><\/span> This rigorous college access and success program is operated by USC Educational Partnerships in the division of University Relations. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal; font-family: Helvetica; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Nearly 1,000 students from various areas of Los Angeles are in this program, with the southern area including Foshay Learning Center, Dorsey High School, Crenshaw High School, Audubon Middle School, and Barack Obama Global Preparation Academy. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2630\" src=\"https:\/\/lastandardnewspaper.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/6S8R8116_web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastandardnewspaper.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/6S8R8116_web.jpg 600w, https:\/\/lastandardnewspaper.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/6S8R8116_web-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption><em><strong>The high school students attend Saturday workshops on USC&rsquo;s campus where they become accustomed to college life.<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure>&nbsp;<\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; Black communities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>Historically USC has been the de facto home school of South Los Angeles, in large part because of the success of the football program.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>It has always been a big deal when somebody from the neighborhood made it to USC.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>Kim Thomas-Barrios, associate senior vice president of USC Educational Partnerships and the director of <span class=\"s2\">USC McMorrow NAI, grew up in Leimert Park and she is a USC graduate.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal; font-family: Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&ldquo;Growing up we watched USC and UCLA football and basketball along with my dad,&rdquo; she said.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>&ldquo;Once my sister and I started USC in 1979, it was jubilation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>Not just in our family but also in our neighborhood.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal; font-family: Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The <span class=\"s4\" style=\"background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);\">USC McMorrow NAI was founded in 1991 and the majority of the program&rsquo;s graduates become first-generation college students. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal; font-family: Helvetica; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"s2\">The high school students in the program attend early morning weekday classes before their regular school day begins.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>All of the students in the program participate in Saturday classes focused on a wide range of subjects (English, math, and science) to provide academic enrichment, SAT prep, and personal development programming.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>The <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Saturday classes give students the rigorous academic immersion they need to compete on a national level<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>This program prepares the students for college academics and also makes them better high school students.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal; font-family: Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&ldquo;We have seen our students get better at their soft skills, like finishing their homework, turning in their homework and test taking skills,&rdquo; <span class=\"s1\" style=\"background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);\">Thomas-Barrios said.<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>&ldquo;They get better at all of that because they&rsquo;re doing a lot of it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>We test them every Saturday, so they&rsquo;re used to the cadence of being in an exam mode and way of thinking all of the time.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>We see that they get better at that.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal; font-family: Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Many college freshmen have a culture shock when their first year begins, but students who go through the <span class=\"s4\" style=\"background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);\">USC McMorrow NAI program will have less of an adjustment period, which will allow them to do well their first semester or quarter in college. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal; font-family: Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&ldquo;When they start college, they are familiar of the cadence of college,&rdquo; <span class=\"s1\" style=\"background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);\">Thomas-Barrios said.<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>&ldquo;There&rsquo;s no bell ringing, or people telling you where to go.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>You have to do this on your own.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>This program teaches them how to be an undergrad.&rdquo;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal; font-family: Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A program like this works best when there is buy-in from the parents.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>Some of the parents did not attend college, and for parents who did attend college, the admission process is different today.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;
